Skimo Racing

Interested in the competitive side of skimo? There are 5 main disciplines, of which typically occur in and out of bounds at ski resorts across the country and internationally:

  1. "Vertical" races are uphill only climbing 1500-2000 vertical feet in about 20 to 40 minutes.

  2. "Individual" races are the main staple of skimo, covering multiple ascents and descents, including bootpacking, over the course of 1-2 hours on and off piste.

  3. "Sprint" racing combines all of the skills of skimo in short rounds of races similar to cross country skiing sprint races.

  4. "Mixed Relay" brings together a team of one male and one female, each who complete 2 legs of around 7 - 10 minutes.

  5. “Teams” races are a longer duration discipline (typically 3+ hours) consisting of teams of 2 working together over more epic, technical backcountry terrain.

Locally, we are organizing a 3-week casual evening race series at Rotarun beginning on February 26th. This is a great place to start with racing at the end of the season. There is also a national race circuit with events in many ski towns. Check out the USA Skimo calendar for more info on this. We hope to provide race support beginning in 2026.
