Skis

Look for skimo race skis or ski mountaineering skis in the 150cm-170cm length range, with a waist/width of 65cm-80cm underfoot. Recommended to have a top notch for skin attachment.

My picks: Atomic Backland UL 65, Dynafit DNA & Mezzalama, Hagan Core or Ultra, Atomic Backland 80 UL

Poles

Ideally fixed-length skimo specific or nordic poles with larger baskets, or lightweight adjustable. Length should be just below armpit.

Helmet/eyewear

Dual certified for skiing and climbing and is breathable/lightweight for training. Goggles or good coverage glasses are important too.

Required for team practices and uphill resort skiing are a headlamp, rear blinky light, and a reflective garment.

What gear do I need?

Ski mountaineering and skimo equipment differs from traditional backcountry ski equipment in that it serves a more specific purpose built for efficiency, speed, and making transitions from skinning to skiing much faster. It’s a completely different sport - so it’s worth investing in specific gear for this purpose.

However, like many gear-heavy sports, it can be expensive. You don’t need to jump into the deep end of high-level race gear to get started. Basic alpine touring equipment is a great way to get started in the sport and super light race setups aren’t required to be a part of Sun Valley Skimo. Below is a general outline of ski mountaineering equipment, but start with what you have and please reach out with any questions.

A great place to look for used gear is the Facebook used skimo gear swap page, and Skimo Co in Salt Lake City is a great resource too.

Boots

Skimo boots typically have one motion for transitioning to/from ski to walk mode and are much lighter than standard backcountry ski boots with greater range of motion in the ankle for efficient skinning.

Great entry level options include Atomic Backland, Dynafit PDG and Mezzalama, and Scarpa Alien.

Skins

2 pairs of climbing skins that fit your ski length and width. For racing skis, these are straight-cut mohair skins with a bungee tip for fast “ripping” and transitions.

Avalanche safety gear

Beacon, shovel, probe.

Bindings

Race or ski mountaineering bindings are minimalist, simple bindings without a turning heel or risers, just a flap to switch from walk to ski mode. Brakes are required for USA Skimo sanctioned races. Check with local ski shop (Backwoods Mountain Sports) for more info on release values.

Recommendations: ATK Trofeo, Dynafit Low Tech Race, Plum Race 150, Hagan Pure 8

Pack

Light ski mountaineering pack that can quickly attach skis with two attachment points. C.A.M.P and Dynafit make great ones.

Clothing

Breathable and weather resistant ski clothing, similar to what you might use to go cross-country skiing.
